GNOME Launch Box is generally an application launcher for GNOME. It's very influenced by Quicksilver for Mac OSX. Remember that this is only a first release so don't get your hopes up too much. Launch Box is written for the GNOME 2.10 platform and depends on GTK+ 2.6, evolution-data-server 1.2 and gnome-menus. These are currently hard dependencies but the plan is to split out the backends into different optional backends.

Currently supported modules are:

· Application starting and launch
· Evolution contacts lookup and mail to
· Recent files lookup and open
· Files in your desktop and open
· Firefox bookmarks lookup and opening

Launch Box is the result of a Hackathon we had at Imendio in the weekend 8th-10th of January. The hackers participating where Anders Carlsson, Mikael Hallendal, Michael Natterer and Richard Hult.

LbItem are objects that you do some action on. The plugins are queried for items that match the current search string. Items are of different types, we currently ship with a bunch of different types. We use different types for two reasons. One is that the plugins can save data in them (email address for contact items for example) and the second is that in the future the module manager can compare to items to see if they are the same and if they are merge them (for example a contact coming from both the IM backend and the evolution address book).

When an item is found the manager is queried for actions on this item. All modules that can do anything with this item should add an action to it. In the future the actions will be weighted in some way so that the most likely action comes on top (for example launch on application). Items should be launched as well, the most used is more likely to be what the user wants and so on.
