A free and standalone weather forecast application for the GNOME desktop environment. #Weather forecast #Weather condition #Weather app #Weather #Forecast #Condition
GNOME Weather is a standalone and open source weather forecast application, specifically designed for the GNOME desktop environment. Actually, it is the first ever dedicated weather app for GNOME. The application has been engineered to display current weather conditions of a single or multiple locations, predictions for three days ahead, radar maps, hourly weather forecast, as well as day and night forecast for each day of the week.
It can notify users on dangerous weather conditions, and automatically downloads the weather conditions from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Its graphical user interface (GUI) is very similar to the one of the GNOME Boxes application, except for the fact that it provides users with basic instructions on what to do with it.
The good thing about this program is that it allows users to add as many locations as they want. They will all be shown on the main window, called World Weather, so you can immediately view the weather conditions of a specific location.
Clicking the “New” button is your only option when using the GNOME Weather application for the first time. You’ll be prompted by a search dialog, where you have to type, select and add a new location.
When clicking on a location, the application will immediately display it in a colored, dedicated screen (in the same window), providing users with weather conditions for the current day, as well as predictions for two more days.
The bad thing about this application is that it has not been integrated into the GNOME-Shell user interface, as it runs in its own window. This can be a little annoying for many users, which prefer to add a weather extension that’s displayed at all times on the main panel.
Summing up, GNOME Weather is a very basic weather application for the GNOME desktop environment. While it can certainly be improved with more detailed weather forecasts and predictions for an entire week, it should definitely be integrated with the GNOME Shell or Panel.
