KTorrent is a free and open source piece of software that provides users with a full featured and very complex torrent and magnet file downloader, specifically designed for the award winning KDE desktop environment under GNU/Linux platforms.

Features at a glance

Key features includes a familiar and modern graphical user interface, support for downloading both torrent and magnet files, support for UDP trackers, built-in torrent search engine using The BitTorrent website, complex plugin architecture, tabbed interface, and speed capping.

In addition, the program allows users to open torrent files that are located locally or remotely, import torrents from other BitTorrent clients or from the KDE3 desktop environment, filter IP addresses, as well as to sort torrents by name, downloaded, size, left, uploaded, download/upload speed, time left, seeders, leechers, share ratio, time downloaded/seeded, % complete, location, and added.

Active torrents can be started, stopped, paused, removed (with or without data files), verify data integrity, filter, suspend, or set speed limits for individual files. You can also quickly switch between tabs to view only downloading torrents, torrents that have finished and are now uploading, or both.

State-of-the-art user interface

The graphical user interface is written with the Qt GUI toolkit, providing KDE users with a native BitTorrent client that features a queue manager, statistics, magnet file information, webseeds management, peer viewer, file viewer, tracker manager, and chunks viewer.

The GUI is quite similar with the well known and widely used uTorrent application for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems, comprised of the main view area and a sidebar where the torrents are automatically filtered by active torrents, downloads, uploads, passive torrents or ungrouped torrents.

Bottom line

Summing up, KTorrent is a really great BitTorrent client for the KDE desktop environment. If you use GNOME, Xfce, Cinnamon, LXDE or MATE desktops, we strongly suggests you to use the Transmission torrent downloader software.
