Ubuntu is one of the most popular free distributions of Linux in the world. It is created and maintained by Canonical, and distributed as several editions with different desktop environments.

This edition is dubbed Lucid Lynx and it was officially announced on 19 September 2009. Being an LTS (Long Term Support) version, it was supported on the desktop until May 9, 2013, and it’s still supported on the server until April 2015.

It is distributed as Live CDs with the usual Desktop and Alternate editions, as well as a Server flavor. All of the are deployable on either USB flash drives or CD discs, supporting both 64-bit and 32-bit hardware platforms.

This was the first Ubuntu release to introduce the revamped boot prompt that it is still used on the latest versions of the operating system. Its best feature was that users didn’t have to see the boot prompt when using the Live CD.

However, you can always press any key during the initial startup process to access the boot menu, which can be used to start an existing operating system, test the RAM (system memory) for errors, check the disc for defects (if using CD media), as well as to install the OS without testing it (not recommended).

Lucid Lynx was also the first Ubuntu release to switch to a dark theme. However, the classic GNOME desktop environment was still used, comprised on two panels, the same great collection of applications, and the same features that existed in previous versions of the operating system.

Default applications include the Nautilus file manager, Gedit text editor, Tomboy notes, F-Spot photo manager, Empathy multi-protocol IM client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Gwibber social networking client, Transmission torrent downloader, Evolution email client, OpenOffice.org office suite, Totem movie player, PiTiVi video editor, and Rhythmbox music player.

Since its initial release back in 2009, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS received four maintenance releases, which brought selected bugfixes and security updated to this long term supported operating system.
