Opera has always been one of those products backed up by a company that isn't afraid to take risks and innovate. Despite not being the most popular web browser out there, Opera was and is one of the most interesting browsers out there.

Opera is mostly known for its innovative features, and Opera One, the new-age browser that completely replaces the flagship Opera Browser for all major operating systems, is here to solidify this fact once again.

The short answer is: a super sleek, modern browser that brings forth pretty much everything users love about Opera.

Of course, there's a lot more to Opera One, as its a completely redesigned browser that promises an enhanced browsing experience by delivering stunning looks, liquid and intuitive navigation, alongside a plethora of interesting new features.

The biggest news and features are as follows: Opera One is the first major Chromium-based browser to use a multi-thread compositor for its UI (more on this a bit later), new Modular Design for the UI, new Tab Islands, and new and exciting integrations with AI services such as AI Prompts, ChatGPT and ChatSonic.

What Opera is trying to achieve here with the introduction of the Opera One is not easy. It tries to deliver a smoother, more fluid, more modern, and more user-friendly browsing experience, all while making its browser look like it's actually 2023, both in terms of visuals and animation. And, to be fair, for the most part, it's right on point.

Let's start with the UI. If you're not an Opera fan, then this new UI might not seem like anything more than just a gimmick. However, that couldn't be further from the truth as there some really cleaver stuff going on underneath.

The dynamic interface Opera delivers is now based on the Modular Design philosophy. This not only makes room for various new features (including the exciting integrated, generative AI tools), but for a faster and better browsing experience as well, and here's how.

By introducing the new compositor thread (or the Multi-thread Compositor) in the UI, Opera manages to relieve some of the stress usually associated with the main tread (as its responsible for a lot of stuff such as interpreting HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code, creating the states of webpages, handling user inputs, communicating with the compositor thread to update screen resolutions, and so forth).

The compositor thread is responsible for taking all these elements created by the main tread, and displaying them on the screen (including animations, transitions, etc.). In short, thanks to this new technology, "everything that needs to happen in the browser UI, happens in the UI thread."

To be more precise, the compositor thread takes the load off the UI thread as follows: the compositor thread performs the actual painting of the animation to the screen. This results in faster and smoother animations that are not affected by stuttering or hitching.

Another great change is the transition to the layer-based animations. These animations run exclusively in the compositor thread (without the involvement of any UI elements). The end result is, again, smoother, crisper, and uninterrupted animations and near seamless visual effects, which inevitably lead to a better experience all round.

The Sidebar has also been redesigned, and it's not only more customizable, but a lot more functional as well. In the sidebar, elements are dynamically adjusted as other, new ones are added. Want to organize tabs in customizable work spaces? Head over to the sidebar. Want to access all the integrated AI tools, players, and messenger apps? Again, just head over to the sidebar.

One of the most annoying aspects of most modern-day browsers is dealing with multiple tabs. Of course, Opera One is not the first browser to introduce "tab stacking," accurately called "Tab Islands." The whole point of Tab Islands is to maximize time and effort. Tab Islands are automatically created once your open more pages of the same website (or the same browsing context). You can collapse and expand the islands with one click.

Even though this is a neat feature, one that for sure will help you work better and faster, once you minimize (stack) the tabs in the Tab Islands, you're only left with the color banner as the reference (which is not particularly ideal, a far better would have been to at least display the icon of the website instead of a color). Even though this feature is not entirely perfect (some new customization options would be great), it's a welcome one nonetheless.

Speaking of innovation, "Opera One is the first browser to come with an integrated browser AI, Aria, the as per Opera's official press release. In a nutshell, Aria is designed to expand the capabilities of your browser with the help of AI technologies (and the good part is that it's not limited to just content prior to 2021 which makes it, at least in theory, a more advanced AI technology than most GPT-based solutions).

Aria is completely free, provides instant up-to-date information (gets answers quickly without digging through webpages and search results), it's available in over 180 countries, and it can be effortlessly and readily accessed from the Opera sidebar.

Aria also connects to OpenAI's GPT technology. This is possible thanks to Opera One's new Composer infrastructure (which is easily expandable). The Composer also allows Aria to connect to various other AI models, and there's a very good chance that we will see even more supported models in the future. One thing is for sure, Opera is keen on expanding and developing its AI strategy and technologies.

To employ Aria's services, you'll need to sign up for an Opera account (if you don't already have one), accept a series of terms and conditions. It's advisable that you read as much and as carefully as you can these terms and conditions since some of them mention some pretty unique privacy-related aspects.

Whether you like Opera or not, the fact that Opera is not afraid to push boundaries is still something worth appreciating. Is Opera One perfect for everyone? Probably not. Is Opera One exciting? With an all new redesigned GUI, a new Modular Design, multi-thread, and compositor thread technologies, as well as the integration of various AI tools, exciting it is indeed.

Like it or not, Opera One is a successful redesign of the Opera browser, and it showcases some of the features that will most likely find their way onto most of the popular browsers out there.
