On the last day of November 2016, Valve pushed the SteamOS brewmaster update 2.98 to the brewmaster_beta channel for public testing, addressing a regression with some Intel Wi-Fi adapters.

Long story short, it appears that many users reported issues with their Intel Wi-Fi adapters not working after updating to the SteamOS 2.97 stable release announced on November 25. As such, the firmware-nonfree package was updated in SteamOS 2.98 to restore version 13 of the Intel wireless 8000C firmware.

Two days later, on December 2, 2016, Valve promoted the SteamOS 2.98 update to the stable channel, which means that it recommends it to all users using SteamOS 2.97 or a previous version. SteamOS 2.0 build 98 was in fact generated on November 29, but approved for general use a couple of hours ago.

SteamOS development hasn't seen any major development since the 2.87 release, which introduced new Nvidia and AMD GPU proprietary video drivers to enable support for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 graphics cards, as well as AMD Radeon "Bonaire" GPUs.

Therefore, it looks like there are more and more requests for new Nvidia graphics drivers on the Steam Universe group, from users who are still using the Debian-based SteamOS operating system for Linux gaming. An updated Nvidia drive would bring support for the recently unveiled Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 and 1050 GPUs.

Until Valve's SteamOS engineers push a new stable or Beta version of the Linux-based gaming operating system that powers Steam Machines, with updated Nvidia and/or AMD graphics drivers, you can download the SteamOS 2.97 installation images from our website.
