With the release of the Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) operating system, Canonical also had the pleasure of informing the community about the latest status of their Snaps universal binary packages.

Powered by the latest Linux 4.8 kernel, Ubuntu 16.10 delivers a wide range of open source and free software projects, most of them with up-to-date versions, including the Mozilla Firefox 49.0 web browser, LibreOffice 5.2.2 office suite, GIMP 2.8.18 image editor, and Mozilla Thunderbird 45.3.0 email and news client.

However, the Yakkety Yak release is also shipping with up-to-date Snap technologies, including Snapd 2.16 and Snapcraft 2.19, which allow you to install various applications that are distributed using the Snap universal binary package, and to package your apps as Snaps for cross-platform distribution.

And right now we're looking at over 500 Snap packages published in the Snappy Store, which users can install with a single line of command (e.g. sudo snap install VLC) or via the Ubuntu Software package manager. Best of all, most of these Snaps are getting updates directly from independent software vendors.

Among the most popular applications you can install from the Snappy Store, we can mention the latest Git build of the VLC Media Player 3.0.0 "Vetinari" video player, Krita 3.0.1 digital painting software, LibreOffice 5.2 office suite, Kicad 4.0.4 Electronics Design Automation (EDA) suite, and much more.
