14 DAY TRIAL // The highly anticipated Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system is launching next week, on Thursday, April 21, 2016, and it is time to reveal some of its unique new features.
We've already shared with you earlier today the fact that Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is coming with Docker 1.10 and Ubuntu Fan Networking, running inside LXD, for the best-conternized applications experience, and you're probably already aware that you'll be able to move the Unity Launcher to the bottom of the screen.
And now we would like to tell you about another cool new feature of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), which should have been implemented years ago, from the moment Canonical added those nifty notifications to keep users informed about what's going on with their system.
As you can see from the screenshot attached on the right, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will send you notifications about software and OS updates that you need to install. As expected, the notifications are not interactive, and from what we've monitored so far, they will appear randomly once every few days.
Until Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) users were notified of available software updates via the Software Updater utility, which popped up on the Unity Launcher when important updates needed to be installed. Well, it looks like that's not the case anymore with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
We believe that our readers are the first to know about this unique feature of the upcoming Ubuntu Linux release, as we've been running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS for the past few months and carefully monitored every change that happened during its development cycle. The "Software Updates Available" notifications started appearing in the last few days.
