Immediately after the Ubuntu Kernel Team meeting that took place on June 23, 2015, Joseph Salisbury announced the next plans for the main kernel packages of the upcoming Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system.

Therefore, we can report today that Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) remains based on Linux kernel 4.0.5, despite the fact that Linux kernel 4.0.6 has been released a couple of days ago, and that it will be soon rebased on the recently released Linux 4.1 kernel.

"Our wily kernel remains rebased on 4.0.5," says Joseph Salisbury. "Also, with 4.1 final having just been release, we'll get our master branch in git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/unstable.git rebased.nbsp; We will then plan on rebasing Wily to 4.1 and uploading as well."

Some confusion started a few days ago when we announced that Canonical stated that the upcoming Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) distribution would be an LTS (Long Term Support) released based on Linux kernel 4.1.

So, no, Ubuntu 15.10 won't be an LTS release, but Linux kernel 4.1 is an LTS release, which means that the Wily Werewolf operating system will have a great kernel base that will be supported upstream with maintenance releases for the next two years.
