14 DAY TRIAL // On September 15, Canonical's Joseph Salisbury brought us the latest news from the last meeting of the Ubuntu Kernel Team, which took place earlier today on the dedicated IRC channel of the project.
We reported a while ago that the anticipated Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system and all of its official flavors will be powered by kernel packages from the upstream Linux 4.2 branch. Today, the Ubuntu developers announced that the OS will remain based on Linux kernel 4.2 for its entire cycle, and that they will track the development of the Linux 4.2 series and update the Ubuntu 15.10 kernel package when new maintenance versions are released upstream.
"Our Wily kernel remains based on 4.2 final and is available in the archive, ie. 4.2.0-7.7. We will continue to track 4.2 for the remainder of the 15.10 cycle," says Joseph Salisbury. "As a reminder, we are approaching Wily Kernel Freeze on Oct 8, ~3 weeks away. If there are any patches which need to land for 15.10, please get them submitted soon. Following the Kernel Freeze deadline, all patches are subject to our SRU policy."
The development cycle of Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) will continue with the Final Beta build, due for release on September 24, followed by the final release of the operating system on October 22, 2015. Until then, there will be a Kernel Freeze on October 8, so Ubuntu kernel developers are urged to submit any patches they might have until that date. We will keep you guys in the loop!
