The developers fixed the problem before the Ubuntu launch

Ubuntu 15.10 will ship with support for the Steam Controller after the developers have fixed a couple of problems that prevented this particular device from working.

We have recently written about a way to add support for the Steam Controller in Ubuntu, but that's no longer the case. The Ubuntu developers have fixed a couple of problems, and it looks like the Steam Controller is now supported by default. The only problem is that other developers will have to do the same for different OSes, since this wasn't something specific to Ubuntu.

The problems were pointing out a few weeks back, but it looks like the Ubuntu team waited until the last possible moment to make the changes. The Steam Controllers are already shipping across the world and they’re bound to get in the hand of Linux players as well. Getting them to work in Ubuntu wasn't a difficult task, and it's nice that's it's been achieved now and not with a post-launch patch.

For the time being, the updated Steam package seems to be available only for Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), but it's possible that the patch will be backported to other supported distributions. This means that Ubuntu 15.10 users will be able to plug the new controller, open Steam, and just play without having to read and apply any kind of advice from tutorials.
