SystemRescueCd, a popular Gentoo-based Live GNU/Linux distribution designed for system rescue and recovery operations, was updated the other day to version 4.9.0, a maintenance release adding new technologies and components.

Powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.4.28 kernel, available for both 32- and 64-bit platforms and fully patched against the "Dirty COW" vulnerability, SystemRescueCd 4.9.0 ships with the recently released GParted 0.27.0 partition editor and e2fsprogs 1.43.3 for better handling of EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4 filesystems.

Linux kernel 4.4.28 LTS is used as the standard kernel in SystemRescueCd 4.9.0, which means that it's the kernel that will be booted by default when running the Live CD on a target computer, but it looks like users will also be able to select a more recent kernel, as the Linux 4.8.5 kernel has been included in this release as the alternative kernel.

Lastly, SystemRescueCd 4.9.0 comes with an updated GRUB2 bootloader that is now based on the upstream GRUB 2.02 Beta3-r1 release. SystemRescueCd 4.9.0 is now available for download through our website, distributed as a single and bootable ISO image that you can write either on a USB flash drive or CD disc.

SystemRescueCd is used independently of the computer OS installed on the target computer to perform various system rescue and recovery operations, including disk partitioning, data backup, data recovery, and other system administrative tasks. SystemRescueCd is created by French developer François Dupoux.
