Jos Poortvliet from Nextcloud informed us about the availability of a new external storage app developed by the Sia folks to provide Nextcloud users with blockchain-based cloud storage support.

Sia is known as a blockchain-based, decentralized cloud storage technology, and starting with version 1.1.2, the platform appears to integrate with Nextcloud, providing users with an affordable, distributed, and last but not least encrypted external storage.

"Sia is a blockchain-based, decentralized cloud storage technology. Think Bitcoin for your data, providing an encrypted, distributed and affordable storage," said the Nextcloud devs. "Sia developed a Nextcloud external storage app providing its redundant and secure data store to Nextcloud users."

Setting up a Sia node in your Nextcloud server is quite easy. Detailed installation instructions are provided by both Nextcloud and Sia teams in their in-depth blog posts here or here, and you can also watch the video attached below to see how easy is to integrate the Sia blockchain-based storage in Nextcloud.

What's the catch? Well, since Sia is an open-source technology, you'll end up saving a lot of money when implementing its blockchain foundations into Nextcloud compared to other public clouds, such as Google or Amazon. More details about Sia can be found on its website if you're not familiar with this decentralized private cloud.
