The distro switches back to the Anaconda installer

Today, June 28, 2016, the developers of the Gentoo-based Sabayon Linux computer operating system have had the great pleasure of announcing the general availability of new respin ISO images for the month of July 2016.

Right on schedule, Sabayon 16.07 Live ISO images are now available for download, switching the OS to the latest Linux 4.6.3 kernel from the deprecated Linux 4.5 branch that shipped with the May ISO respins of the GNU/Linux distribution, Sabayon 16.05.

Additionally, Sabayon 16.07 switches the operating system back to the Anaconda installer because it appears that the distro-independent Calamares installer framework is creating various internal problems for the time being.

"Fabio took the ball and decided to keep maintaining Anaconda in his free time, and he upgraded it to the latest version! So we opted out to replace Calamares in our Official release process," reads today's announcement.

Introducing the first Sabayon LXQt Edition

Best of all, Sabayon 16.07 introduces the first edition built around the next-generation LXQt desktop environment, which pretty much looks like LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), but it's built around the latest Qt technologies.

Some more good news for the Calamares fans: the Sabayon 16.07 LXQt flavor ships by default with the Calamares installer. However, please note that the LXQt edition has been marked as Alpha quality.

You can download the 64-bit Live ISO images of Sabayon Linux GNOME 16.07, Sabayon Linux KDE 16.07, Sabayon Linux Xfce 16.07, Sabayon Linux Minimal 16.07, Sabayon Linux SpinBase 16.07, as well as the new  Sabayon 16.07 LXQt right now via our website.

Of course, existing Sabayon Linux users don't need to download anything. Just make sure that your installation is always up to date and in sync with the Sabayon repositories to receive the latest security fixes and software versions.
