A new maintenance update was released for the pfSense 2.3.x stable series of the open-source and free firewall distribution based on the latest FreeBSD technologies.

pfSense software version 2.3.4 comes more than two months after the pfSense 2.3.3 update, and promises to bring even more system stability improvements and bug fixes, security patches, as well as a bunch of new features. First off, this release is based on FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-p19.

Updated components include ntpd 4.2.8p10_2, cURL 7.54.0, and libevent 2.1.8, and the Dashboard received a small revamp to also display the BIOS version, release date, and vendor, as well the Netgate Unique ID, making it possible to identify an instance of pfSense software for those who want to acquire support services.

"The Netgate Unique ID is similar to a serial number, it is used to uniquely identify an instance of pfSense software for customers who want to purchase support services. For hardware sold in our store, it also allows us to tie units to our manufacturing records. This ID is consistent across all platforms," said the devs.

The Netgate Unique ID is supported on virtual machines, cloud and hosted instances like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as bare metal, and it won't be transmitted anywhere without your approval. It's only there for the pfSense stuff to better identify your hardware when requesting support.

Improvements were also added to firewall GUI certificates as users of Google Chrome 58 or Mozilla Firefox 48 and later web browsers may encounter issues when accessing pfSense's web-based interface, but firewall admins are instructed on a new method of generating certificates for use by the GUI.
