The developers of the popular, independent, open-source, and cross-platform archive manager PeaZip software have announced earlier today, October 4, 2015, the immediate availability for download of PeaZip 5.8.0 for GNU/Linux/UNIX, and Windows OSes.

According to the brief release notes posted on the project's GitHub page, PeaZip 5.8.0 is a feature release that introduces support for creating archives whose filenames contains characters encoded with the Unicode/UTF-8 method. This version is based on the latest 7z 15.07 backend.

Additionally, PeaZip 5.8.0 is now capable of opening no less than 188 file extensions, which is a pretty high number considering the fact that it's an open-source project. Among the newly-supported file formats, we can mention VDI (Oracle VirtualBox), VMDK (VMWare), and QCOW2 (QUEMU).

"PeaZip 5.8.0 can now create and extract archives with filenames containing UTF-8 characters, and comes with 7z 15.07 backend. 188 file extensions can now be opened, including various virtual machines disk image formats as VMDK (VMWare), VDI (Oracle VirtualBox), QCOW2 (QUEMU)," reads the announcement.

While existing PeaZip users can easily update their installations using the built-in updater utility of the software, new users can download PeaZip 5.8.0 for GNU/Linux distributions, as well as for Microsoft Windows and FreeBSD operating systems right now from Softpedia or via the project's website where you can find more details about the software.
