The OpenWrt project, through Steven Barth, has recently announced that the third RC (Release Candidate) version of the anticipated OpenWrt 15.05 (Chaos Calmer) open-source third-party firmware for routers is available for download and testing.

According to the release notes, which have been attached at the end of the article for reference, OpenWrt 15.05 Release Candidate 3 brings a newer kernel version (Linux kernel 3.18.18 LTS), support for new chips, as well as various fixes when compared to the previous RC release.

"The OpenWrt developers are proud to announce the third release candidate of OpenWrt Chaos Calmer," says Steven Barth in the email announcement. "As always a big thank you goes to all our active package maintainers, testers, supporters and documenters."

Among the most interesting things, we can mention support for BCM43602 in brcmfmac, fixes for the image builder generation process, an updated version of mt76 with support for new firmware, as well as DMA and TX fixes, and patches for several critical security vulnerabilities, especially for things like OpenSSL and cURL.

Of course, there are many other minor improvements, as well as under-the-hood enhancements present in this third Release Candidate version of OpenWrt 15.05 (Chaos Calmer). If you want to test it, download OpenWrt 15.05 (Chaos Calmer) RC3 right now from Softpedia, but keep in mind that it's a pre-release version, not recommended for production routers.
