A cups-filters vulnerability has been identified and corrected in the Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS operating system.

OpenPrinting CUPS Filters or cups-filters could have been made to crash or run programs as the lp user if they processed a specially crafted print job. This issue has been fixed and Ubuntu maintainers have been quick to plug the problem by upgrading the packages.

"Petr Sklenar discovered that the cups-filters texttopdf filter incorrectly handled line sizes. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code as the lp user," reads the security notice.

For a more detailed description, you can see Canonical's security notification, which covers many more details. Users are advised to upgrade their systems as soon as possible. You can either upgrade Ubuntu with the regular tool or you can also use the terminal to upgrade the system. Just enter these commands in a terminal near you:

code
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This is not a major update and it will take a very short time to install the new package. Also, users don't need to reboot the system as this is not a core package.
