On October 27, 2016, NetBSD Project, through Soren Jacobsen, proudly announced the release and general availability of the second maintenance update to the NetBSD 7.0 operating system.

After spending six months in development, the NetBSD 7.0.2 release is now available for those running NetBSD 7.0 or NetBSD 7.0.1, but also for those who are still using an older version of the BSD-based operating system and haven't managed to upgrade their systems, bringing them a collection of security patches and recent software updates.

"The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 7.0.2, the second security/bugfix update of the NetBSD 7.0 release branch. It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed important for security or stability reasons. If you are running an earlier release of NetBSD, we strongly suggest updating to 7.0.2," reads the release announcement.

Looking at the release notes, we can notice that NetBSD 7.0.2 includes OpenSSL 1.0.1u, NTP 4.2.8p8, BIND 9.10.4-P3, and root.cache 20160825 updated components. Moreover, it bounds checks on input issues for the libsa library and addresses some problems with the protocol handling in X11 client libraries.

Furthermore, there are various MIPS pmap improvements, a patch for an NFS (Network File System) crash, as well as a crash that occurred when attempting to mount an FSS snapshot as read and write. NetBSD 7.0.2 also fixes an issue with the UFS1 file system when it was created outside the operating system.

Last but not least, NetBSD 7.0.2 brings you SPARC64 improvements like Remote Access Server (RAS) support for 32-bit kernels and better kernel module relocations, a fix for a vioif issue, and OPENBLOCKS200, OPENBLOCKS266, WALNUT, and EV64260 kernel image support in evbppc.
