Still using the LXDE desktop environment

Lubuntu is one of the Ubuntu flavors that participates in the Alpha 1 release of the upcoming Wily Werewolf (Ubuntu 15.10) operating system, so we took it for a quick test drive to discover what is new.

Powered by Ubuntu's Linux kernel 3.19.0-22.22 packages, Lubuntu 15.10 Alpha 1 is just a bugfix release and is still built around the LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) project. The final version will be based on Linux kernel 4.1 LTS, as we reported the other day.

According to the very short release notes, it would appear that the LXQt desktop environment has not been included in Lubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) Alpha 1 because it is still in development.

Those of you who want to give Lubuntu 15.10 Alpha 1 a try can download the Desktop or Alternate ISO images from Softpedia, but please keep in mind that it's a pre-release version, which means that it has many known or unknown issues that can be viewed in the release notes mentioned above.

We do not recommend installing it on production machines. For those who don't want to test the Lubuntu 15.10 Alpha 1 operating system, we've prepared a quick screenshot tour that you can view below.
