An official announcement is yet to appear online

While there's no official announcement at the moment of reporting this, it would appear that the Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" operating system has been approved for landing, and the Cinnamon and MATE Live ISO images are available for download.

We just reported the other day that Linux Mint project leader Clement Lefebvre revealed the fact that the highly anticipated Linux Mint 18.1 release could arrive as soon as this coming weekend, but not before the upgrade path from Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" was fully functional for all users.

So without any further ado, we'd like to invite our readers to download the official Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" Cinnamon and MATE editions right now from the project's FTP servers or through our web portal. Both 64- and 32-bit variants are in place, and there's also MD5 checksums if you want to verify the ISO images for integrity.

Most probably, the Linux Mint team is preparing for the launch of Linux Mint 18.1 as we speak, but they're waiting for the rest of the download mirrors to be synchronized with the main server. We are also aware of the fact that some of you are waiting for the torrent downloads, and they'll be available too when everything is announced on the Mint website.

As for the goodies implemented in Linux Mint 18.1, we'll reveal every single new feature as soon as it's officially out. However, you should know that it is still based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system and the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel. You can download Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon and MATE ISOs.

Thanks to the anonymous reader who sent in this great submission!
