id Software hasn’t learned from other game studios that Linux is an emerging platform and neither did their publisher, Bethesda. They seem content on releasing the source code for the Doom 3 BFG Engine and saying no to a native client.
The impending release of the Doom 3 BFG Engine has sent some small ripples in the Linux community, but no one got over excited at the thought the id Software might want to develop a Linux client for the game.
Still, some hope still remained. That hope was crushed in the tweet to Michael Larabel from phoronix.com from Brian Harris, a developer at id Software.
“We have no plans to create a Linux version but I bet someone will port it once the code is released,” stated Harris.
If a Linux client will miraculously appear in the next couple of years, we’ll certainly keep you posted.
