The GNOME Project just launched the second and last scheduled maintenance update for the current stable GNOME 3.24 desktop environment, so we can't help but notice that several apps and components are receiving updates.

The GNOME Shell user interface and Mutter window and composite manager have just been updated to version 3.24.2, as part of today's GNOME 3.24.2 desktop environment release, and they contain various changes, most of them being fixes and workarounds for various issues.

Besides various miscellaneous bug fixes, GNOME Shell 3.24.2 comes with better support for handling errors from GNOME Shell extensions during reloading when settings are being changed, improved StEntry::primary-icon-clicked emission, support for allowing search providers to offer clipboard text for results, and the ability to fetch weather information only when there's a valid location available.

On the other hand, Mutter 3.24.2 comes with a better copy and paste of UTF-8 strings between the Wayland and X.Org Server (X11) display servers, better support for non-Wayland builds, support for accessing screen coordinates on X11, a fix for a crash that occurred when Wayland clients attempted to commit to destroyed surfaces, and a fix for frame updates when the "hide-titlebar-when-maximized" option is changed.

Other than that, various language translations have been updated and some other minor bugs fixed. You can download both GNOME Shell 3.24.2 and Mutter 3.24.2 source tarballs right now from our website if you're an OS integrator or a power user who fancies compiling his/her own software. Otherwise, you should wait for the GNOME 3.24.2 desktop environment to arrive in the stable repos of your favorite GNU/Linux distribution.
