The developers of the world's most popular free, cross-platform and open-source distributed version control system, Git, have announced the release and immediate availability for download of the first point release of Git 2.6 for all supported platforms.

According to the internal changelog, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, Git 2.6.1 is a small release that brings in only two changes. The first is related to the Xdiff code, which is used by the software to generate diffs. The Git developers modified this code to handle files of approximately 1GB in size, for now.

"Xdiff code we use to generate diffs is not prepared to handle extremely large files.  It uses 'int' in many places, which can overflow if we have a very large number of lines or even bytes in our input files, for example.  Cap the input size to somewhere around 1GB for now," read the release notes.

The second change implemented in Git 2.6.1 is about the execution of arbitrary code by various protocols, such as git-remote-ext, which could affect those who activate recursive fetch by default in Git. Therefore, the Git developers limited the allowed protocols that run arbitrary code found in the URL to only those known to be safe.
