It will take a long time until we see this game on Linux

Galactic Civilizations III is a massive strategy game developed by Stardock Entertainment, and it was released on the Windows platform all the way back in May 2015. Now the developers are saying that there might be a chance to see the game on Linux, after Vulkan launches.

You might be wondering what Vulkan is, and you would be right to do so. As you might know already, the majority of games on the Linux platform are running on OpenGL, but that is a rather old technology, and Vulkan is an evolution of OpenGL. The two will continue to exist side by side for a while, but Stardock Entertainment is now willing to invest time and resources in something that is going away.

The problem is that Vulkan is still far away from completion, and it's unlikely that we'll see anything stable and usable this year. That also means that Galactic Civilizations III won't arrive on Linux any time soon.

"Vulkan, we're not messing with OpenGL. Sorry. Once Vulkan is available, we'll use that," noted a developer from Stardock Entertainment on the Steam forums. It will be a while until we get to see Galactic Civilizations III on Linux, but maybe Stardock will change its mind if SteamOS is a success.
