The day of November 23, 2016 brought us the second Beta development release of the upcoming FreeNAS 10 open-source storage NAS (Network Attached Storage) operating system based on FreeBSD, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

FreeNAS 10 Beta 2 comes almost three months after the first Beta milestone, and the devs are proud to say that the upcoming operating system, which will be a total rewrite, is now feature complete, and there are many GUI enhancements for the Dashboard, Volume UI, Accounts, System, Services, Networking, Calendar, Console, and Peering. Also, it looks like feature-parity with the FreeNAS 9.10 is in place now.

"We are also very happy to say that we are now “feature complete” and have feature-parity with FreeNAS 9.10. Anyone who’s been following the FreeNAS 10 development effort knows that FreeNAS 10 represents a complete rewrite of the world’s most popular software-defined storage OS," reads the release announcement.

The user interface is probably one of the biggest areas improved in this second Beta development release of FreeNAS 10, which now features a scriptable command-line interface, as you can see from the gallery below, but there's also the implementation of new capabilities for hosting containerized applications and virtual machines, thanks to the implementation of a new bhyve hypervisor.

FreeNAS 10 will be fully asynchronous, allowing one or multiple users to log in, submit tasks, and then log out without having to wait for these tasks to complete. Additionally, there will be a new, real-time alerts or task notifications system for the maximization of situational awareness. To get a taste of all these goodies and much more, you can now download the FreeNAS 10 Beta 2 ISO image.
