14 DAY TRIAL // FreeBSD's Glen Barber has announced the availability of the fourth Beta for the upcoming FreeBSD 11.0 operating system, a major release that will introduce a huge number of new features and improvements.
Looking at the release notes, we can notice that FreeBSD 11.0 Beta 4 is yet another small development snapshot that only addresses some issues discovered or reported by users since the previous Beta release.Still, it also implements a handful of new features and updates existing components.
For example, the mtx_trylock_spin kernel synchronization primitive has been added, the newly implemented system hardening options have been improved to no longer overwrite existing ones that are selected by the user during installation, and it looks like the iwmfw and iwm drivers have been updated again.
Other than the above, FreeBSD 11.0 Beta 4 re-enables the machdep.disable_msix_migration loader tunable for EC2 AMIs (Amazon Machine Images) and fixes several build-related issues. This new Beta is available, as usual, for 64-bit, 32-bit, PowerPC (PPC), PPC64, SPARC64, ARM, and AArch64 (ARM64) hardware architectures, but the last two come with a warning.
"For convenience for those without console access to the system, a freebsd user with a password of freebsd is available by default for ssh(1) access. Additionally, the root user password is set to root, which it is strongly recommended to change the password for both users after gaining access to the system," says Glen Barber.
