Canonical has announced that the latest Firefox 40.0.3 version has been made available in the repositories for the users of Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

The Ubuntu maintainers for the Firefox package have been quick to upload this version of the browser, just as it happened for the previous 40.x branch. As the version number suggest, this is not exactly a huge update and only corrects some security issues.

"A use-after-free was discovered when resizing a canvas element during restyling in some circumstances. If a user were tricked in to opening a specially crafted website, an attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking Firefox," reads the security notice.

More details about the issues that have been identified in the Firefox browser can be found in our original report. To fix this issue, Ubuntu users need to upgrade as soon as possible. This can be done in a couple of ways, either with the dedicated upgrade tool or by using the terminal.

If you decide to use the terminal, these are the commands that you have to enter (root is required):

code
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You can also download the latest Firefox 40.0.3 from Softpedia and run it that way, without having to install it.
