On December 20, 2015, the development team behind the leading multimedia framework for GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems announced the availability of the fourth maintenance release for FFmpeg 2.8.

According to the brief release notes, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, the FFMpeg 2.8.4 release is now the most advanced stable FFmpeg version from the 2.8 "Feynman" series, bringing updates to various core components, including libav and ffmpeg-mt.

"2.8.4 was released on 2015-12-20. It is the latest stable FFmpeg release from the 2.8 release branch, which was cut from master on 2015-09-05. Amongst lots of other changes, it includes all changes from ffmpeg-mt, libav master of 2015-08-28, libav 11 as of 2015-08-28," reads today's announcement.

The fourth maintenance release in the FFmpeg 2.8 series also updates several core libraries to their latest versions. They are libavutil 54.31100, libavcodec 56.60.100, libavformat 56.40.101, libavdevice 56.4.100, libavfilter 5.40.101, libavresample 2.1.0, libswscale 3.1.101, libswresample 1.2.101, and libpostproc 53.3.100.

Most GNU/Linux operating systems should already have the latest FFmpeg 2.8.4 release in their default software repositories so that users can update to it as soon as possible. As usual, we strongly recommend that you always run the latest stable version of a piece of software on your Linux box to avoid system issues and crashes.
