The issues should be resolved in the shortest time possible

Earlier today, October 4, 2016, Fedora Project's Adam Williamson published a public service announcement (PSA) to inform the Fedora Linux community about an important issue with the internal update process.

It appears that many users of the Fedora 24 operating system have reported in the last 24 hours that they are getting "duplicated packages" and "kernel updates not working" errors when attempting to run the "dnf update" command to update their installations with new package versions released through the official software repositories.

After some investigation, Mr. Williamson has come to the conclusion that there's a bug in the "dnf update" process that causes a graphical desktop environment like GNOME or KDE or the entire X Window System (X11) to crash, but it depends on the hardware configuration or package set installed by the user.

"When that happens, the update process is killed and does not complete cleanly, which is why you get 'duplicated packages' and other odd results," says Adam Williamson. "I'm working with the reporter right now to investigate and hopefully get this fixed, but in the meantime DON'T RUN 'dnf update' INSIDE A DESKTOP."

So, if you're using the Fedora 24 Linux operating system, please do not execute the "dnf update" command when using a desktop environment like KDE, GNOME, Xfce, etc. to update your system. You can do it via text mode by hitting the Ctrl+Alt+F3 keyboard shortcut to switch to the virtual console, or by using the offline update system.
