14 DAY TRIAL // After reporting the other day on the immediate availability of the Enlightenment 0.19.12 open-source desktop environment, a release that dropped support for the next-generation Wayland display server, today we're happy to inform you about the development of the next major release of the project.
The development of the upcoming Enlightenment 0.20.0 desktop environment is now open, with a first Alpha release out the door, bringing full support for the Wayland display server, a brand new screen management dialog and infrastructure, an all-new audio mixer gadget and infrastructure, a geolocation module, better support for the FreeBSD operating system, and replacing several internal widgets with Elementary.
"After over a year since the E19 release, the first E20 Alpha is now ready for testing. There were 47 contributors and over 1700 commits--more than a 10% increase since the last major release--and I'd like to thank everyone who helped along the way," reads the announcement. "Due to mechanics related to frametime animators in EFL releases, internal windows are currently in a mostly-broken state on Wayland."
Those of you who are courageous enough to take this first Alpha build of the upcoming Enlightenment 0.20.0 desktop environment for a test drive can download the Enlightenment 0.20.0 Alpha source package right now from Softpedia and start compiling it by hand. However, please note that this is a pre-release version, not suitable for production use.
