The Music app will be used only for listening to music

elementary OS developers are working to integrate a dedicated application for listening to podcasts and leave the Music app to do what it does best, namely play music.

The developers of elementary OS have decided that just because a media player app, in their case Music, can be used to also play podcasts, it doesn't mean that it has to.

The popularity of podcasts has dropped in the past few years, but recently they have been on the rise again. More and more users decide that a podcast is the right way to disseminate a lot of information quickly, so now developers are adjusting to this new paradigm.

“The mental models between a music app and a podcast app are vastly different, though. I don't go, ‘Hmm, I want to listen to one or more MP3s. Do I want that to be a series of songs, or a podcast?’ Just because one underlying piece of technology is the same doesn't mean it needs to be the same app. Especially when you start to consider the unique aspects of podcasts like subscribing, downloading, streaming, video, etc. It's just a whole different monster,” said Cassidy James on the official elementary OS blog.

The new application that will be used for podcasts is called Vocal and it will be dedicated to this specific purpose, which means that the interface will be adjusted accordingly.
