Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS have been updated in order to correct an e2fsprogs vulnerability that was identified.

e2fsprogs actually stands for ext2/ext3/ext4 file system utilities and is regarded as an important component. The devs have explained that it could have been possible to crash or run programs as an administrator under certain conditions.

"Jose Duart discovered that e2fsprogs incorrectly handled invalid block group descriptor data. A local attacker could use this issue with a crafted filesystem image to possibly execute arbitrary code (CVE-2015-0247, CVE-2015-1572)" the official notification reads.

This issue has been identified and corrected in Ubuntu OSes. For a more detailed description of the problems, you can see Canonical's security notification. Users have been advised to upgrade their systems as soon as possible.

In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes and you don't have to restart the PC in order to complete the update.

You can also use the terminal to update the system. Just enter these commands in a terminal near you:

code
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
The update process is quick and the procedure quite simple. It's not a major problem, but it's good for users to upgrade their PCs as often as possible.
