The CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) open-source and cross-platform printing system for GNU/Linux and Mac OS X operating systems reached version 2.1 after being in development for approximately three months.

The software has received support for basic 3D printers based on the PWG White Paper policy and template, addresses multiple issues in the handling for journald, it fixes support for domain sockets on Linux systems, and adds better support for the systemd init system and service manager.

Moreover, Common UNIX Printing System 2.1.0 repairs signal handlers in DNSSD and USB backends, updates the autoconf sources to use the newer form of AC_INIT, and Limit All in Policy sections have been applied to all operations when the software is being used by itself.

"CUPS 2.1.0 offers improved support for IPP Everywhere, adds support for advanced logging using journald on Linux and ASL on OS X, and includes new security features for encrypted printing and reduced network visibility in the default configuration," says Apple in today's announcement.

CUPS 2.1 had a single Beta build and one RC (Release Candidate) version during its development cylcle. It is a stable release that should be treated as an upgrade to the CUPS 2.0 branch. You can download the CUPS 2.1.0 sources for GNU/Linux and Mac OS X operating systems right now from Softpedia.
