Laurențiu Păncescu has announced that starting with the recently released CentOS Vagrant 1705.01 images, the project is now also providing official CentOS Vagrant images for the Hyper-V provider.

Designed by Microsoft, Hyper-V is a native hypervisor that's installed by default in various Windows flavors, including Windows 10 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, Windows Hyper-V Server 2012, and Windows Server 2008 or newer, and it's also available on the Microsoft Azure enterprise-grade cloud computing platform.

The CentOS developer behind the new CentOS Vagrant images for the Hyper-V provider thinks Hyper-V is a good alternative to VirtualBox for those using the Vagrant open-source software for building and maintaining portable virtual software development environments professionally on Windows hosts.

"We now support Hyper-V, libvirt (KVM), VirtualBox and VMWare as Vagrant providers," says Laurențiu Păncescu. "Just like with other proprietary hypervisors like VMware, we have no possibility to automatically test the images for Hyper-V on our Continuous Integration infrastructure. We welcome any feedback from Hyper-V users."

Work on the CentOS Vagrant images for Hyper-V took much longer than the developer expected, since October 2016, but they're finally here and you can download them as we speak from the CentOS website. Those interested in the build scripts can grab them from the vagrant directory of CentOS' GitHub repository.

CentOS Linux is an open source alternative to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, on which it is based. The project offers a free, community-supported, and enterprise-class server-oriented computing platform that follows a rolling release model where you install once and you always get the latest security and software updates without downloading a new ISO image and reinstalling the OS.
