Microsoft has decided to provide support for the Unity game engine, ensuring that a lot of independent game developers will be able to make titles for Xbox One.

Microsoft has a program that is called ID@Xbox, which is basically an independent developer self-publishing program for Xbox One. In order to develop games for Xbox One, you will also need some pretty expensive middleware tools, but Unity already has that covered.

“To us, ID@Xbox is about providing a level playing field for all developers. So, we worked with Unity and we’re pleased to announce that, when released in 2014, the Xbox One add-on for Unity will be available at no cost to all developers in the ID@Xbox program, as will special Xbox One-only Unity Pro seat licenses for Xbox One developers in the ID@Xbox program.” reads the announcement from the xbox.com.

Besides the fact that we are going to see a lot games built on Unity for the new Xbox One, the reverse is also true. Most likely, games developed for Xbox One will also be ported for the Linux platform, which is already supported by Unity.
