The famous XBMC, a software media player and entertainment hub, is now available for Ubuntu users through a PPA.

One of the major problems with Ubuntu is its repositories. Users won’t be able to find the latest versions for most of the applications, which can be annoying sometimes. The good news is that numerous important packages have other maintainers that use Lauchpad and PPAs to make sure users can get the most recent version of a software along with everyone else.

Now, the XBMC for Linux team has put together a PPA, which hosts the latest stable XBMC release, 13.1 Gotham. This is also the most complete and the best release made so far in the series, so it’s understandable that users want it.

All you have to do in order to install the application is to enter a few commands in a terminal (you will need to be root):

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install xbmc

After the installation has been completed, you will find the software in Unity’s Dash.

The 13.x branch of XBMC integrates some very interesting features, such as Android Hardware Decoding (for 4.0 and up), Raspberry Pi and Android speed improvements, Stereoscopic 3D Rendering, better Touchscreen Support, better UPnP capabilities, numerous Audio Engine Improvements, and Settings Improvements.
