It will take some time before Wayland becomes a viable alternative

Wayland, a protocol for a compositor to talk to its clients, as well as a C library implementation of that protocol, which can be used as a standalone display server running on Linux kernel modesetting and evdev input devices, an X application, or a Wayland client itself, has reached version 1.0.1.

Wayland 1.0.1 is a maintenance release fixing a number of bugs in from the 1.0.0 version. The most important change is Jonas Adahls' fix for out-of-order delete_id events, which allows us to fix a crash happening during EGLSurface destruction.

It seems that the current testing procedure is not working properly, but this will change for future releases of Wayland.

“We'll restructure the way we run the tests, port over the current tests to the new approach and then drop the current test framework. So we'll ship 1.0.1 with failing tests, but at least now we understand why they fail and that the failures are in the test suite, not in Weston,” stated Kristian Høgsberg, developer for Wayland.

A detailed list of changes can be found in the official announcement.
