Wine 1.5.6, a new development version of the famous framework used to run Windows applications on Linux, has been announced by Alexandre Julliard, the leader of the Wine project.

Wine 1.5.6 brings some much needed updates and represents an important milestone in the development of Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator).

Highlights of Wine 1.5.6:

• The Mono add-on package is installed automatically; • A control panel applet for joysticks has been implemented; • Device bitmap rendering is now done through the DIB engine; • Support for video rendering through DirectX (VMR-9) was added; • First steps towards a D3D shader compiler have been taken; • Build fixes for DragonFly BSD have been implemented; • Various bug fixes.
