The WebKitGTK+ developers announced a few days ago that the first Beta release towards WebKitGTK+ 2.2, a WebKit-based open source web engine that uses GTK+ as its user-facing front-end, is available for download and testing.

WebKitGTK+ 2.2 Beta 1 adds an API to inject custom JavaScript code to the WebKit2 Web Extensions API, adds support for running JavaScript code in isolated worlds for the WebKit2 Web Extensions API, and exposes WebKitFrame in the WebKit2GTK+ Web Extensions API.

Among the bugs fixed in this release, we can mention an issue with the volume slider track which was displayed when muted, a crash in WebKit1 when the inspector window was closed, and the authentication dialog will now close when the load fails. Also, the Brazilian Portuguese translation has been updated.

A couple of days after this release, Gustavo Noronha Silva announced another minor version, which adds support for maintainer mode and DOM bindings symbols. Read the official release announcements, here and here, for more details.

Download WebKitGTK+ 2.2 Beta 1 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a beta version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
