A new SteamOS version is now available for download

A new SteamOS update has been made available by Valve to correct a bug that caused some problems during the booting process.

Valve doesn't usually release one update after another unless the developers did something wrong in the previous version. In this case, they introduced a regression with the plymouth package that needed to be fixed as soon as possible.

That problem was introduced with the SteamOS 138 update, which added a number of packages from Debian upstream. Plymouth was among the new packages and it should have added support for system update notification and a Bash fix for the Shellshock vulnerability.

There was an issue with plymouth and now we have the SteamOS 139 update, which reverts the plymouth package to an earlier version. "The same content as update 138, except plymouth has been rolled back to the previous version until we can address the update issues. Sorry for the screwup," says Valve's John Vert.

The good news is that Valve has been quick to fix the Shellshock vulnerability as well, but the Bash problems are far from over, so it's very likely that we'll see at least one more minor SteamOS update pretty soon.

You can download the latest SteamOS version from Softpedia. This is not a Live CD version and you will have to install it.
