Andrew Zajac announced the availability for download of the Ubuntu Rescue Remix 12.04 operating system, now based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin)

Ubuntu Rescue Remix 12.04 provides a robust yet lean system for data recovery and forensics that can run on computers with low hardware configurations.

Among the new features added to the distribution there’s the new “ddrutility”, a new tool written by Scott Dwyer to identify files affected by unrecoverable blocks on a disk image.

Users can choose to install a metapackage that will provide the data recovery and forensics toolkit onto your current Ubuntu Desktop system. Keep in mind that the tools themselves will still work only in a terminal.

The toolkit can also be installed on a live USB Ubuntu desktop with persistent data. To do so boot into your USB system and add the following archive to your software channels, in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:arzajac/ppa sudo add-apt-repository ppa:scott-dwyer/ddrutility sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install ubuntu-rescue-remix-tools
