Ubuntu fans might see one of their greatest wishes come true and get a 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) release, with a GNOME 2.0 look and feel.

If you feel like you haven’t tried a proper Linux for desktop for half a decade, the new Ubuntu MATE Remix will make you feel right at home. As the name suggests, a new Ubuntu-based distro is in the works and it looks like an ancient artifact.

When everyone is trying to do something that will blow your mind, other people just want to return to the good “old days” of simpler times and simpler desktop environments.

“I am planning to create a new distro of Ubuntu which will have the GNOME 2 look and feel. For those of you who are subscribed to ubuntu-users, you would have heard about my plans to create this (Anyone interested in a ‘GNOME 2 look and feel’ remix?)."

“Officially called Ubuntu MATE Remix, this will integrate the MATE Desktop Environment to the power and stability of Ubuntu,” said Ben Tinner, the developer of the distribution, on Ubuntu’s mailing list.

So far, the OS is still based on the latest Ubuntu 13.10, which was just launched, but the developer wants to make a fresh one on the Ubuntu 14.04 branch.

It’s unlikely that this will become an official flavor, but it will be interesting to see how many people still want that “old look and feel.”
