14 DAY TRIAL // Ubuntu MATE Remix is still under development and its makers are looking to integrate it under the great umbrella of Ubuntu. It will take a while to make that happen, but until then, Ubuntu users will have access to MATE PPA.
The Ubuntu MATE Linux distro is built by a team and one of the developers is also working on the MATE desktop. He set up a PPA for the latest MATE desktop environment and Ubuntu users can now install the software much more easily.
Getting a PPA ready is much easier that providing the packages in the official repositories. They need to be tested and adapted for the Ubuntu repos, which means that it can take a while until the latest version becomes available for all the users.
"One of the requests that has come out of my discussions with Ubuntu Technical Board was creating a MATE 1.8.1 PPA for Ubuntu Trusty 14.04. So, here it is," said Martin Wimpress on Google+.
Installing the MATE desktop environment is quite easy and the users only have to enter a few commands in the terminal (keep in mind that it only works on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS):
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/trusty-mate
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-mate-core ubuntu-mate-desktop
