As you might know, the Ubuntu 15.10 operating system is now open for development with daily builds already available for download, but currently based on the latest snapshot of Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet).

Being based on Vivid, Ubuntu 15.10 uses its Linux 3.19 kernel packages, but the Ubuntu developers announced today, after an Ubuntu Kernel Team meeting, that they will switch soon to Linux kernel 4.0 and that the final release of Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) will most likely be powered by Linux kernel 4.1.

"We are initially tracking the 4.0.x stable series on wily master-next. Tracking of the 4.1 series is going on in our unstable git repo on kernel.ubuntu.com," says Joseph Salisbury in an email to the Ubuntu Devel mailinglist. "In the interim, the 3.19.0-16.16 kernel from Vivid has been copied and seeded in the archive for Wily."

Daily Builds of Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) are already available for download on Softpedia, so you can get the latest snapshots and see for yourself what's new. The first Live CD ISO images with Linux kernel 4.0 might arrive next week. As usual, stay close as we will keep you informed with the latest news about the development of the Ubuntu 15.10 operating system.
