It's official! The final version of the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) will be based on the forthcoming Linux 4.1 kernel, due for release at the end of June 2015, according to Canonical.

On June 16, Joseph Salisbury informed us that Canonical's Ubuntu Kernel Team took the unanimous decision to rebase the upcoming Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system on Linux kernel 4.1 once the final version is available, which will be an LTS (Long Term Support) release.

While Ubuntu 15.10 remains rebased on Linux kernel 4.0.5, they are currently tracking the recently released Linux kernel 4.1 RC8 in their master branch located at git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/unstable.git.

"Our wily kernel remains rebased on 4.0.5. We have uploaded but are planning to land some additional config changes before we have the kernel promoted out of wily-proposed," says Joseph Salisbury. "We have also moved to tracking 4.1-rc8 on our master branch. We will plan to rebase Wily to 4.1 final once available."

At the moment of writing this article, Ubuntu 15.10 is offered only as daily build ISO images based on the Linux 3.19 kernel packages of the Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) operating system. The first Alpha for opt-in flavors should arrive next week.
