The news comes after yesterday's keynote of Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical and Ubuntu, where we learned about the goals of the next major version of the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf).

Today, the Ubuntu Online Summit for Ubuntu 15.10 has kicked off with some workshops about Ubuntu Touch App and Scope development, Ubuntu convergence, Ubuntu on Cloud, Ubuntu Core, and various other components of the Ubuntu Linux operating system.

As such, the Ubuntu developers have had the pleasure of informing both developers and users that the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system is now open for development, which takes place on Canonical's Launchpad.

"After a few procedural hiccups, Wascally Wabbit^W^WWily Werewolf is now open for development," says Adam Conrad. "This is fairly good timing, as we'll have a bunch of new shiny in 15.10, and some time to polish all of that for 16.04, so get to merging and let's make this another awesome release!"

An interesting thing about Ubuntu 15.10 is that, at the moment, it appears to be derived from Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 (Stretch). The final release of the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system is expected on October 30, 2015, though the release schedule hasn't been published.

At the moment, there are no Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) daily build ISO images available for download, but we will notify you as soon as they are published by Canonical. Ubuntu 15.10 should be based on Linux kernel 4.0, but it remains to be seen if live patching will be enabled by default.
