According to the official release notes of the Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) operating system released by Canonical on April 23, 2015, this is the first ever version of Ubuntu to ship with the controversial systemd init system by default.

As such, systemd replaced Upstart as the default service and boot manager in all Ubuntu flavors, including Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu GNOME, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, and Ubuntu Studio.

Some will say that systemd is a very innovative and useful piece of software, but there are many others who don't agree with this statement. Therefore, Canonical instructs its users on how to disable systemd and switch back to using Upstart as the default init system.

To do so, select the "Advanced options for Ubuntu" at the boot prompt when your computer starts. Then, select the "Ubuntu, with Linux ... (upstart)" entry. However, this will work only for the current session, so if you want to make it permanent, you'll have to install the upstart-sysv package.

In a comprehensive article entitled "systemd for Upstart users," Canonical explains the differences between the two init systems and how they work, so please make sure that you read it if you want to know more about systemd in Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet).
