The Canonical developers are already hard at work on the operating system

The development for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr has just begun, and Canonical has chosen a very recent Linux kernel to start the build.

For the previous couple of distributions, the company has tried to adopt the newest Linux kernel available. That means that now they need the most bleeding edge stuff, more precisely the latest Release Candidate for the 3.12 branch.

“The Ubuntu-trusty git repo is officially open. It's been rebased to the latest v3.12-rc6 upstream kernel. We have not yet uploaded to the archive but will likely do so soon,” stated Joseph Salisbury after the Ubuntu Kernel Team meeting.

Besides the Trusty Tahr name, we know quite a little bit about the upcoming operating system. It will most likely feature the Mir display server and Unity8.

The first alpha version is scheduled to arrive on December 19, and the final version is expected on April 17, 2014.
