Discussions regarding the launch of a new point release for Ubuntu 14.04 are ongoing

Canonical is considering the possibility of launching another point release for Ubuntu 12.04, the fifth one, and it might arrive in September.

Normally, only four point releases had been planned for Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin), but the success of the distribution has pushed the developers into thinking about a new version. It was initially proposed a few days ago, but now Canonical is trying to determine the date for such a release.

“The point releases have roughly held a 6 month release cadence and I don't believe that should change for 12.04.5. Since 12.04.4 released in February, August sounds like a reasonable estimate assuming we can avoid clashing with the 14.04.1 release. It might be more realistic to push 12.04.5 to September, but I'll leave that to the discretion of the Ubuntu Release Team,” said Leann Ogasawara, the leader of the Ubuntu kernel team.

When Ubuntu 12.04.5 arrives, it will most likely feature the Linux kernel from Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr), which could very well be 3.13 or even 3.14, making this a very important release.
